Hooky scores for RAF fire fighters as final goes to penalties
Northolt beat Coningsby in a sudden death penalty short out in the final of the Hook Norton Brewery cup for RAF fire fighters five-a-side football teams. The two teams had drawn nil-nil at full time in the event, which raised over £650 for Cancer Research.
Twelve teams of fire fighters fought it out for the privilege of calling themselves the Royal Air Force Fire Service Charity five a side football champions. Sponsored by Hook Norton Brewery teams travelled from RAF Cottesmore, Coningsby, Waddington, Odiham, Northolt, Marham, JSU Corsham, and TAC AT Fire from RAF Lyneham to take part in the event along with three teams from the host RAF Brize Norton. The day kicked off at 10.00am, teams were split into two leagues with the top four of each league going into a knockout cup competition and the teams in fifth and sixth place going into a knockout plate competition. The final of the Hook Norton Brewery plate competition was a close game with RAF Odiham beating TAC AT Fire 3-2.
An evening of excellent entertainment was provided by 99 Sqn band Blue Whiskey as the party at Trendies Fire Section bar continued late into the night. A spokesman for RAF Brize Norton Fire Section said: “We would like to thank everybody involved for making the occasion so successful. With special thanks going to Hook Norton’s Hugh King and the Hook Norton Brewery who sponsored the entire event, without their support the event could not have taken place. “A great day was had by all who attended with over £650 being raised for Cancer Research UK.”
