Hook Norton pub scoops prestigious design award

CAMRA and English Heritage celebrates architectural excellence with Pub Design Awards 2015

A castle, a tap and an old bridge have all scooped honours in the prestigious Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Pub Design Awards. CAMRA has announced the winners of its Pub Design Awards 2015, run in conjunction with English Heritage. Winners include The Castle at Edgehill in Oxfordshire, The Old Bridge in Leeds, The Harrogate Tap in North Yorkshire and The Wallaw in Northumberland.

“The pub design awards celebrate the architects, designers and pub owners who have the bravery and vision to go above and beyond when restoring, conserving or designing pub buildings. From the preservation of ornate Victorian features in Leeds, to the sensitive restoration of pub in a gothic style castle in Oxfordshire – the Pub Design Awards recognise the importance of fantastic design in pubs across the breadth of the UK.” Sean Murphy, Pub Design Awards judge and competition organiser

The Castle at Edgehill in Oxfordshire won both a Refurbishment and Conservation award. This historic, listed Gothic folly of the mid-1740s, designed by architect Sanderson Miller for himself (on the site where King Charles I’s standard-bearer planted the royal arms before the first battle of the Civil War of 1642), has been a prominent landmark on this famous ridge for almost three centuries.

The Castle Inn has stood proud on the Edgehill escarpment for centuries. Commanding unrivalled views across South Warwickshire, we were keen to develop the pub to allow more people to enjoy this unique landmark.  From a brief to “open up the trading areas and improve the facilities whilst retaining all the charm of the building” we are delighted with the result, and of course delighted to receive not one but two prestigious awards, recognising the investment we have made.  The designers and builders interpreted the brief, and executed it brilliantly, and this award is just recognition of all the work involved.” James Clarke, Managing Director (brewing) Hook Norton Brewery

CAMRA will be presenting the award to James Clarke (Hook Norton Brewery) and Chris Hewitt (designer) on 30th June at The Castle Inn, Edgehill.
