Hook Norton Brewery Backs Campaign to Secure UNESCO Status for Cask Ale
Hook Norton Brewery, renowned for its commitment to traditional brewing practices, is throwing its weight behind a campaign to secure UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status for cask ale.
We‘re urging its loyal supporters and the wider public to sign a petition launched by The Craft Beer Channel to protect this unique British brewing tradition.
Cask ale, a staple of British pubs, is produced and served using a traditional method that sets it apart from other beers worldwide. It relies on natural carbonation and can be served directly or pulled from the cask, requiring specific equipment and the expertise of pub staff to ensure its quality. Hook Norton Brewery believes that cask ale’s unparalleled is a testament to its cultural significance.
“Cask ale is at the very core of what we do here at Hook Norton,” said James Clarke, MD at Hook Norton Brewery. “It’s a living tradition that connects us to our history and our community. We believe it’s vital to protect it, especially now, with the hospitality industry facing immense financial pressures.”
The petition, hosted on the UK Parliament website, argues that cask ale plays a crucial role not only in the financial health of pubs, breweries, maltings, and farms but also in the cultural fabric of British society.
“We believe that recognising cask ale as Intangible Cultural Heritage would help safeguard its future,” James added. “It’s a unique part of our heritage that deserves to be celebrated and protected.”
The Craft Beer Channel, known for its award-winning YouTube content, visited Hook Norton Brewery a few years ago to film an episode, showcasing the traditional brewing methods employed by the brewery. The video (below) highlights the brewery’s dedication to preserving the art of cask ale.
Hook Norton Brewery is calling on its customers and beer enthusiasts across the UK to sign the petition and share it with their networks.
“We need everyone’s support to make this happen,” says James. “Please join us in ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the unique taste of cask ale.”
