Welcome to “Not Just Small Beer”
An Art Exhibition Celebrating Alewives and Brewsters Through Time
Hook Norton Brewery is proud to host Not Just Small Beer, a vibrant art exhibition that shines a light on the historic and mythical figures of the brewing world: the alewives and brewsters.
The exhibition brings together artists from diverse backgrounds and practices, each interpreting the stories of these remarkable women in their own unique way. Through painting, sculpture, installation, and mixed media, visitors will encounter fresh perspectives on the cultural and social history of brewing—one often overlooked or forgotten.
Responding directly to the brewery and its surrounding buildings, the artists also pay homage to the long history of Hook Norton—its people, its landscape, and the deep connections that have sustained it for generations. The result is an exhibition rooted in a sense of place, celebrating not only the act of brewing but the broader community and craft that have grown alongside it.
From the everyday work of medieval brewsters to the folkloric power of mythical alewives, Not Just Small Beer celebrates the creativity, resilience, and legacy of women who brewed not only beer, but also community and culture.
Hosted in the heart of Hook Norton Brewery, the exhibition blends art and heritage in an inspiring setting. Visitors will be invited to reflect, engage, and enjoy the dialogue between brewing’s past and present.
The exhibition launches on Saturday 11th October from 2pm to 4pm and then runs daily 10am – 5pm until Sunday 26th October. Free entry.
